      <image:title>Welcome - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>It was Rick’s idea to make the top three strings have frets (for guitar chords) and the bottom three fretless bass (to sound like an upright bass). At first I was very reluctant to have a half fretless instrument as technique for fretless bass and fretted guitar are quite different. Rick was very excited about this as a project. I gave him a deposit…and hoped I’d be able to play it!</image:caption>

It was surprisingly logical and I was able to play chords and fretless bass lines almost immediately, though my technique has now improved considerably over the years. <image:caption>Microphone Shootout! When booking an album project at 25th Street Recording in Oakland in 2015, the studio gave me a session to try their vocal mics before deciding which to use for my project. This lineup of vintage mics contains a number of microphones considered to be the “Holy Grail” list of coveted vocal mics. Values ranging from about $3,000 to over $25,000 each! From left to right: Neuman M49, two Elam 251’s, AKG C12, Neuman U87, and a Neuman U47. Though I have used Elams (on the “Jazz?” album in London and NYC) and a U47 (on “So Many Reasons” in Amsterdam), the C12 was the winner here for me. I also used a C24 (not pictured) which is a stereo version of the C12.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Playing with Gretchen Peters and Barry Walsh for Gretchen’s “Hello Cruel World” album launch in NYC - 2013 I met Gretchen when she was a guest songwriter/presenter at the West Coast Songwriters Conference in Los Altos, California back in 1999. I had won the song-of-the-year award that year and was featured at the conference’s Sunset concert along with other award winners and guests. I had a great performance and received a standing ovation for my two-song set. Gretchen’s manager gave me his card afterwards and invited me to visit them in Nashville if I was ever there. I later took the opportunity to fly to Nashville and afterwards worked with her there once for a radio show. I moved to Europe in 2001 and in 2004 when Gretchen needed a bassist for a UK/Ireland Tour she hired me and also gave me the opening act slot. It was my first of three European tours and a lasting friendship with Gretchen and Barry. I loved playing bass on her music and had both Gretchen and Barry play on my song “The Beautiful Princess of Never Come True”.</image:caption>

Randy also mastered “Fathers and Sons” for me in 2017 though his rates had definitely gone up! Left: My first bass guitar that I bought new at the age of 14 in 1974, up for sale at Manny’s Music in NYC. A ‘74 Fender Jazz Bass. As a teenage I modified the bass by adding a third pickup in between the two stock pickups. The wood was routed out to make room for it. I didn’t know at the time that I would be destroying it as a collectors item as older fender basses are now highly sought after. Sounded good though!</image:caption>
